World’s largest geared compressor rotor manufactured in Duisburg

Siemens manufactured and tested the world’s largest geared compressor rotor at its Duisburg, Germany facility. With a diameter of 1.8 meters (5.9 feet), the first-stage impeller is the largest installed on an integral-geared compressor rotor.

The impeller was balanced in Duisburg at a speed of 3,970 revolutions per minute. At its average operating speed, the outside diameter of the first-stage impeller rotates at a speed of 1,350 km/h (839 mph) – faster than most jet aircraft.

siemens-stc-gvThe STC-GV compressor rotor is part of an order placed in 2015 by UK-based Air Products PLC. Siemens is supplying 19 model STC-GV compressors for an integrated gasification combined cycle power plant (IGCC) in Saudi Arabia. Commissioning is scheduled for 2018.

The air separation facility will supply 75,000 metric tons of (combined) oxygen and nitrogen to a plant currently under construction in the Jazan province on the coast of the Red Sea. Jazan Gas Projects Company will operate the air separation plant that is part of what will be the world’s largest industrial gas complex. Jazan Gas Projects Company is a joint venture between the local company ACWA Holding and Air Products, an industrial gases company headquartered in the U.S.

The STC-GV compressors with their customized design are the largest integral-geared main air compressors ever built. Each of the rotors weighs more than seven tons.
