Process Reciprocating Compressors
Dresser-Rand offers the industry a complete line of process reciprocating compressors—eleven models, 5 to 45,000 HP, pressures from vacuum to 60,000 psi. Our products reflect 250 years of combined experience from the names you trust: Ingersoll-Rand, Worthington, Dresser-Clark. No other manufacturer offers such a wide variety of machines to handle most applications. From such a wide selection, the process engineer can readily choose the compressor that best fits your needs exactly. Highly versatile compressor designs are available for single, multi-stage or multi-service compression applications, from one to ten compressor cylinders. Dresser-Rand compressors include:
  • HHE and BDC models from 200 to 45,000 horsepower (149 to 33,557 kW)
  • ESH, HSE and PHE models up to 1,000 BHP horsepower (746 kW)

Precision Construction

Every part, from crosshead to crankcase, from bearings to crankshaft, is precision made to exact tolerances. Dresser-Rand reciprocating compressors are designed for easy maintenance. All moving parts are readily accessible through convenient, oil tight covers. The crosshead on larger frame sizes (HHE and BDC) has been designed to eliminate the threaded connection between the piston rod and crosshead. A flanged crosshead design with hydraulically-tensioned studs is used on 3.5" piston rods and larger. Hydraulic tensioning is standard on all frame and cylinder bolting 1-5/8" and larger.

Reliability

Dresser-Rand reciprocating compressors have established an outstanding record for endurance, dependability and versatility. That’s why more than 28,000 rugged compressors and engines have distinguished themselves around the world. Based on proven design principles, they have set the pace in all types of process applications.

Compressor Applications

The HHE and BDC compressors are exceptionally suited to the very largest applications, which require maximum gas handling capabilities at high operating or differential pressures. Typical applications include hydrocracking, hydrotreating and desulfurization refinery processes; natural gas processing and high pressure injection; chemical and refrigeration processes; enhanced oil recovery; natural gas, ethylene, carbon dioxide and oxygen pipelines; and ammonia, urea and polyethylene production. Shown here is a 13,000 horsepower HHE-VL hydrogen compressor.

The ESH, HSE and PHE compressors are exceptionally suited to the smaller applications, which require compact, simple and speedy installation. A skid-mounted HSE package is shown here. These compressors perform reliably in a variety of difficult process applications including ammonia, butadiene, butane, carbon dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide, methane, bone dry nitrogen, pentane, phosgene, propylene, sulfur dioxide, and vinyl chloride.

Compressor Cylinders

Dresser-Rand’s modern cylinder lineup is based on the latest cylinder design technology. Our heavy process (HHE and BDC) cylinder designs shown here have been analyzed using FEA and strain gauge tested to prove the FEA model while selected cylinders were successfully burst tested. All cylinders within a rod load class have a common distance piece bolt circle so that only one distance piece design is required. New distance pieces have external bolting for easier maintenance. Process cylinders are designed with full water jackets around the cylinder bore. Efficient water jackets keep the cylinder bore walls cool for maximum ring life, especially important for non-lube applications, and also dissipate heat during unloaded operation.

Capacity Control

Dresser-Rand has three types of capacity control devices, which can be selected to best suit your application. Plug, port and plunger type unloaders are used to unload one or more cylinder ends for starting or for capacity control. Clearance pocket unloaders are used for alternate gases or for alternate design flow conditions. They may be used in combination with plug, port or plunger type unloaders for maximum flexibility in process control and minimum waste of power caused by bypassing. Clearance pocket unloaders are of the same design as port unloaders.

Compressor Valves

Valves are the most critical component in compressor reliability. Our continuous research and development has produced a new generation of efficient and highly reliable valves with new technology materials. Dresser-Rand applied more than a century of design and manufacturing experience to create the MagnumTM valve shown here and make it compatible with all brands of reciprocating compressors and an extensive range of operating conditions and gas processes. Since its release to the market, more than 20,000 MagnumTM valves are operating successfully in lubricated and non-lubricated service, with gases ranging in molecular weight from 2 to 71, speeds from 327 to 1,000 RPM and discharge pressures ranging from 35 to 4,000 psig.

Dresser-Rand’s proprietary dynamic valve analysis (DVA) computer program is used to analyze full and part-load operating conditions to maximize valve reliability while minimizing horsepower and capacity losses.

Compressor Wear Parts

Dresser-Rand now offers a complete line of DuraWearTM performance parts for reciprocating compressors, including piston rings, rider rings, and rod packing rings available for both lubricated and non-lubricated applications, for pressures up to 11,000 psi, for temperatures up to 395ºF, and for clean/dry, wet/dirty, or corrosive applications.

Engineering Capabilities

At Dresser-Rand, comprehensive engineering and careful workmanship based on more than 250 years of compressor building experience make the difference. Dresser-Rand engineer’s combine proven design features with new refinements and developments to provide the most modern process and gas field compressors in the world. Our in-house metallurgical laboratory for process quality control, materials review and component analysis ensures consistent, repeatable performance. For each compression system, Dresser-Rand can digitally analyze piping for resonance and vibration, and then design the required pulsation dampeners. Representing the ultimate in design, material and construction, our machines are built to meet today’s and tomorrow’s processing needs.

Product Reapplication

With over 2.5 million OEM detailed drawings, material specifications and design criteria, Dresser-Rand is the best source for engineering to reapply, revamp or upgrade existing equipment. At the same time, we engineer the latest Dresser-Rand product developments into your reapplication. You’re also supported by our global manufacturing and service center operations.
