Siemens Industrial RB211*

Power Generation: 33.2 MW or Mechanical Drive: 33.7 MW

The Siemens Industrial RB211 gas turbine package matches the technologically advanced gas generator with the efficiency of the RT62 or RT61 power turbine. The aero derivative industrial design has demonstrated outstanding reliability, with more than 750 Siemens Industrial RB211 gas turbines sold, accumulating a total of over 36 million operating hours of experience.

The latest evolution of the Siemens Industrial RB211 gas turbine portfolio offers class-leading power density in electrical generation through a compact, lightweight and highly maintainable package optimized for offshore applications.

Features and Field of Application

The Siemens Industrial RB211-Gzero retrofit upgrade provides existing users of Siemens Industrial RB211-C and Siemens Industrial RB211-G gas generators, utilising RT-56 and RT-62 power turbines, with a nominal 10 per cent power increase depending on ambient temperature. The Siemens Industrial RB211-Gzero upgrade further enhances the productivity and customer value of these reliable units.

The upgrade can be easily achieved with minimal modification to the existing package design during routine unit overhaul. This cost-effective and simple retrofit approach ensures facility down-time is minimised, while performance, power and operator profitability are optimised.

The power enhancement is achieved with increased air flow featuring zero-staging, partial re-blading of the intermediate pressure compressor and upgrading of the inlet vane of the power turbine to suit the higher flow.

Technical Specifications

  • Same footprint as current Industrial RB211 variants
  • Upgrade focuses on two of the five modules: air intake and intermediate pressure compressor
  • Conversion made during the overhaul cycle
  • Factory tested for low risk site installation
  • Ease of gas generator refit
  • Minimal package alteration
  • No impact on efficiency
  • Only cold section changes to gas generator

Siemens Industrial RB211-GT30*

Power Generation: 33.2 MW or Mechanical Drive: 33.7 MW

The latest evolution of the Siemens Industrial RB211 gas turbine portfolio offers class-leading power density in electrical generation and mechanical drive through a compact, lightweight and highly maintainable package optimized for offshore applications.

The Siemens Industrial RB211-GT30 gas turbine uses the existing gas generator, which in its different variants has accumulated over 37 million hours in service, coupled to a lightweight free power turbine derived from the Rolls-Royce aerospace Trent 800 and the Siemens Industrial Trent. All rotating components in the power turbine are well proven, with over 24 million hours accumulated in flight and over 1 million hours in industrial service. The power turbine is also used in the Rolls-Royce Marine MT30 gas turbine, in service with the U.S. Navy and the British Royal Navy.

The output speed of the power turbine is optimized to direct drive a two-pole AC generator at either 60 Hz or 50 Hz with no need for a gearbox, with obvious savings in weight and footprint. The Siemens Industrial RB211-GT30 can also be utilized in mechanical drive applications, making it one of the most flexible gas turbines in its range. Its performance is optimized for hot climates, delivering significantly more power at 30°C than its predecessors. The lightweight gas turbine is integrated within the compact Dresser-Rand package, which utilizes a “torque tube” design with 3-points mount to distribute the mechanical loads in offshore floating service without affecting the rotating equipment while in operation.

The result is a product that is 30 percent smaller and lighter than its predecessors, offering clients the highest power density in its class to maximize production while reducing topside weight. The package utilizes proven modules, and has been optimized to facilitate safe maintenance and reduce down time, even in challenging offshore conditions.

Overview of benefits

  • Lightweight, compact modular package
  • Evolution of Industrial RB211, enhanced with proven components
  • Optimized for hot climate performance
  • No “hot lock out” periods, as standard, without barring motors
  • Fast engine exchange to maximize uptime
  • Modular package architecture for 50 or 60 Hertz electrical generation or mechanical drive
  • Designed for maintenance to maximize availability and reduce OPEX

Features and Field of Application

With more power, reduced weight and footprint and maintained reliability, the Siemens Industrial RB211-GT30 can reduce upfront capital investment and increase long-term value creation. It is a direct fit for Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels and a dependable choice for all offshore power generation and mechanical applications.
