Revamped Turbines Operational at Susquehanna Nuclear Plant

DRESSER-RAND WAS AWARDED a contract by PPL Corporation in March 2007 to revamp three non-Dresser-Rand steam turbines, manufacture three new steam turbines, and install, commission, and start up each turbine at the Susquehanna Nuclear Plant. The three revamped turbines became operational at Unit 1 of the facility on April 22, 2010.

The contract is D-R’s largest applied technology project to date, its largest commercial contract secured in the nuclear industry and its first major field service contract for a nuclear power plant.

Applied technology initiatives enable D-R’s Engineered Solutions group to incorporate the same technology and engineering standards used to design and produce its own steam turbines, and apply them to non-Dresser-Rand units. These engineering capabilities were employed to custom-design the three new turbine casings for PPL Corporation.

“This application is a natural fit for our rugged API engineered turbines and complements our experience in the oil and gas, power generation and Navy nuclear markets,” said Jim Cowan, D-R’s project development manager. “Dresser-Rand has a proven product with a good fit for this application in terms of power and speed range.”
