A non-return valve—part of the rotating equipment protection
system—is placed in extraction and/or induction steam piping to
prevent back-flow of steam and/or water into the turbine after a
unit trip.
Gimpel offers a "free-swing" design that closes when a flow
reversal is sensed across the valve. Pneumatic and hydraulic
operating cylinders are available.
